The Gavarres mountain massif, with 28,000 hectares, was declared a site of natural interest in 1992 for its exclusive flora and fauna. It combines a typical Mediterranean landscape of pine, oak and cork trees with more humid areas. There is a great diversity of fauna with more than 100 species of birds. The cork trees have supported the cork industry for centuries, as demonstratedby the Cork Museum in Palafrugell, which is also well worth visiting.
There are well-marked routes for biking or hiking. One of them reaches the Sanctuary of the Mare de Déu dels Angels: at 485 meters, it offers panoramic views of the area.
